How to Care for Your Leather in 3 Simple Steps
Step 1: Clean
Start with NSC Leather and Saddle Soap to gently clean your leather and remove dirt, grime, or any residue from other products. This soap is gentle and contains humectants to ensure your leather stays moisturised and no drying occurs. Use with warm water prior to conditioning opens the pores of the leather to allow the conditioning products to properly absorb and feed your leather.
- How to Use: Wet a cloth or sponge with warm water, apply the soap, and clean your leather in circular motions. For tougher grime, rinse the cloth and reapply soap as needed. Once finished soaping, follow with a clean, damp warm cloth to remove the dirt loosened by the soap. After cleaning, follow with conditioner.
Step 2: Nourish
After cleaning, it’s time to feed your leather with one of our nourishing conditioning products. Choose NSC Leather Oil for very dry or sun-faded leather, or NSC Leather Conditioner for nourishing regular care.
- How to Use for NSC Leather Oil: Shake the bottle well, then apply the oil with a cloth or sponge to dry or faded leather. Work the oil in, paying extra attention to the driest areas. Buff to a shine and let it absorb. For calf or hide saddles, use sparingly, especially on the underside. Follow with NSC Leather Conditioner to seal the leather when sufficient oil has been applied to reverse the fading or dryness. On very old, dry or faded leather this may take several coats over several days.
- How to Use for NSC Leather Conditioner: Apply a thin layer with a cloth or mitt. Gently massage it into the leather and let it absorb fully before applying another coat if needed. For very dry leather, start with NSC Leather Oil before applying the conditioner.
Step 3: Protect
Now, to protect your leather from the elements (especially if you ride near the coast, or in all weathers) finish with NSC Leather Wax. This is like a ‘raincoat’ for your leather, and will create a waterproof barrier that helps your leather withstand harsh weather.
- How to Use: Apply in thin layers using a lint-free cloth, sheepskin mitt, or your hands (the warmth from your hands can help the wax absorb). Allow the first layer to fully absorb before adding more. Around stitching or piping, or with textured leathers like buffalo, apply lightly to avoid buildup. If you notice any unwanted residue, you can easily remove it by gently heating the area with a hairdryer set to low-medium and wiping the excess product off with a cloth.
